Monterey Park Neighborhood Watch

By Tom Guzman MPark NWatch Captr. and CERT Civilian Coordinator

Please communicate the following issue to as many residents you know
in Monterey Park.

Presently, there are criminals who roam our streets during the day to
look for women (primarily) who are driving into their resident garages.

Residents may be unaware of persons either parked on their street with
unknown individuals sitting in them (or in some cases following them).

Once the vehicle is in the garage, these criminals rush the parked
vehicle in the garage and steal, in this case the woman’s purse (if a man
robs) and in some cases the victims are assaulted.

If you believe you are being followed by unknown individuals, do not drive
home, either if able:

(1) Drive to the closest fire station and continuously honk your horn, or press your vehicle security alarm button.

(2) Drive to gas station, or where there are a lot of people, and again if still being
followed, do the same thing attract a lot of attention, don’t be shy.

(3) If exiting from a shopping mall (i.e. Santa Anita) visually scan around
your vehicle, if you see persons sitting in their vehicles near or around
your vehicle, and if you feel something doesn’t quite feel safe, return to the mall, obtain the services of one of the security guards to escort to your vehicle.

Another tip: If you exiting a shopping mall, just to put packages in the
trunk of your vehicle, and are returning to the mall to do more shopping.

Instead, place your packages in your vehicle, enter your vehicle and drive
to another parking location out of view of where you were originally parked
then return to the mall to do further shopping.

The holidays are approaching and there will be more criminals roaming malls,
and parking lots to prey are individuals that do not have “Situational Awareness”.

“Situational Awareness: in today’s world, you have to evaluate where you are at any moment, and think of the worst case that may happen to you (especially if you are accompanied by younger children and/or seniors.)

What defensive measures would you make, honk the horn, use your vehicle security alarm, do you wear a whistle, yell “Fire, Fire, Fire” that gets more attention than “Help”.

There is an action-taking place to release 20,000 prisoners from within the
United States, a large amount in California because of the Supreme Court ruling of the overcrowding in California prisons.

Be safe and practice “Situational Awareness” daily.
