October 11, 2015
Dear Editor,
17th Annual Retired Teachers Week is November 1-7, 2015. And we all owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to those teachers who not only taught us but shaped us in our youth.
Retired teachers do not go out to pasture, they continue to give of themselves to our communities in so many different ways. The retired teachers from Whittier Division 31 in the past year have volunteered a total of 12,387 hours through a variety of activities and community service projects to Ronald Mc Donald House collecting pop pull tabs and donating aluminum foil, paper goods, to First Day Shelter new clothing such as tee shirts, socks, personal hygiene products, baby items, diapers, to Greater Whittier YMCA newspapers and purchasing Christmas Wreaths, to Friends of the Whittier Library hardback and paperback books, to the Whittier Elks Christmas toys, volunteering in hospitals, schools, church, community activities, literacy tutoring, assisting seniors by driving to doctor appointments, errands, shopping, activities at senior housing, Arboretum. Using common values for such services, this is a gift of $284,901.00.
You should take the time to thank a former teacher who impacted your life and the lives of your children. They would love to hear it!
Sincerely,
Rosalie F. Nuanes, President California Retired Teachers Association Whittier Division 31
