Electronically Serving Monterey Park, Alhambra, San Gabriel, & Rosemead

South Garfield Specific Plan

On June 23th the City Council had a joint meeting with Planning Commission, Design Review Board, Economic Development Advisory Committee and Environmental Commission in the Service Club House.

Michael Huntley, Director of Community and Economic Development, welcomed everyone to this meeting. He said the city received a grant of $500,000 from the MTA to redesign the South Garfield Shopping District since the MTA would be locating a train station at Garfield Avenue in Montebello.

Shane Burkhart from RBF Consulting presented to the Councilmembers, Commissioners, Committees and Boardmembers the same information as he presented to the residents and business owner at the June 1st meeting.

This is a revised draft of the specific plan for the neighborhood that was first drafted in 1987 and revised in 2000.

The presentation included a power point and renderings of the plans to revitalize the area.  The residents and business owners requested several changes that included their input on parking, sign designs, outdoor dining, landscaping, additional cross walks and more.

Michael Huntley and Shane Burkhart advised the audience that this draft is a living thing that can be amended in the future. Changes made to the neighborhood today can be built on for future generations.

MTA has not yet announced where they will located their park and ride garage. It could be located on the Montebello side or Monterey Park side of the 60 Freeway.

Please visit the city’s website to review the lengthy draft.

The next scheduled meeting on this project will be August 11th in the City Hall during a Planning Commission Meeting at 7 PM.

For additional information on this project please call City Hall’s Planning Department at 626-307-1315.

Monterey Park is growing old so the residents and business owners could use this revitalization on one of their famous shopping centers.
