Rosemead HS Girl Runners Get Fast Win against Arroyo

Rosemead High School girl’s varsity cross country team took a major step towards winning the Mission Valley League championship with a convincing 23-32 win against visiting Arroyo High School on Thursday, Oct. 8, at Rosemead High and Rosemead Park.

Seniors Brittnie Munoz and Elizabeth Lyons ran a blistering first mile to pull away from the field until it caught up in the park. That’s when the Rosemead sophomores took over with Kelly Luc and  Jocelyn Hua surging ahead to give Rosemead four of the first six runners finishing the race. Rosemead had a team time of 1:36.10.

Munoz, who won the league title the past two seasons, won Thursday’s race in 18:18, with teammates Luc (18:51) and Lyons (19:06) completing the 2.92 course in second and fourth place, respectively. Hua (19:40) finished in sixth place and another sophomore, Jennifer Phung (20:15), earned 10th place to round out the scoring for the host Panthers.

Arroyo was led by junior Laura Gazca (18:55) in third place, and Aileen Garcia (19:15) in fifth, Jacky Alcala (19:41) in seventh, senior Jessica Centeno (20:05) in eighth, and Lucy Lopez (20:12) in ninth.

Rosemead’s league record is now 2-0 and is 2-0 overall. Arroyo’s league record is 1-1.

In boy’s varsity, Arroyo easily won the race 19-36 with Efrain Alcala (15:52) in first, Jesus Ocana (16:03) in third, Sam Garcia (16:08) in fourth, and Eric Alvarez (16:16) in fifth.

Rosemead was led by senior Chris Le (15:59) in second place. Both teams have a 1-1 league record.

Rosemead also won the boy’s junior varsity race 21-42, and the boy’s frosh-soph race 23-32, while Arroyo also won the girl’s junior varsity race 24-32.  Rosemead’s winning teams are 2-0 in league.
