Assemblymember Chau co-hosts Information Session on New State and federal Programs for Undocumented CA Residents
On Thursday, April 23rd, Assemblymember Ed Chau (D-Monterey Park) held an event in the City of Rosemead to discuss Assembly Bill (AB) 60 Driver’s License and to better inform the public about the President’s expansion to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parental Accountability (DAPA) immigration programs.
Assemblymember Chau was joined by Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Los Angeles and other partners to provide the public with information on the programs, where they can go to obtain assistance, and how to avoid immigration service scams.
“California is home to the largest population of undocumented immigrants,” said Assemblymember Ed Chau. “It is incumbent on all government officials to ensure that information is disseminated to everyone who may benefit from the passage of new state laws and federal programs.”
In 2013, the Legislature passed and the Governor signed into law AB 60 (Chapter 524: Statutes of 2013), which requires the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to issue an original driver license to an applicant who is unable to submit satisfactory proof of legal presence in the United States. The following year, on November 20, 2014, President Obama announced various areas where his Administration will modify immigration policy through the DACA and DAPA immigration programs. In general, these reforms included changes to immigration enforcement policy; deferred action expansion; and changes to our legal immigration system.
Also in attendance at the information session were representatives from the DMV, The Asian Youth Center (AYC), Coalition for Humane Immigration Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), the office of the Mexican Consulate General in Los Angeles, Global Unified Chinese Organizations from Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos, the National Chinese Welfare Council of L.A, Chinatown Service Center, PACE and constituents.
