Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library Hosts 2015 National Women’s History Month Honoree Author Judy Yung

The Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library will host 2015 National Women’s History Month Honoree Judy Yung on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at 2 p.m. in the Friends Room at a program honoring Women’s History Month.

Yung, an oral historian, author and professor is recognized for her groundbreaking work in documenting the immigration history of Angel Island and the life stories of Chinese American women. As a guest speaker at the March 29 “History Alive – Real Life Stories Program,” Yung will talk about her book “Island: Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island, 1910-1940” which documents the hopes and despairs of Chinese immigrants in poetry written and carved on the walls at Angel Island.

The National Women’s History Project (NWHP) recognizes a select group of women each year to educate the public about women’s role in history. Yung is one of nine women selected by the National Women’s History Project to be honored for contributing to the NWHP’s work of “writing women back into history.” The 2015 National Women’s History Month honorees include journalists, educators, historians, authors and other contributors: Delilah L. Beasley, Gladys Tantaquidgeon, Eleanor Flexner, Polly Welts, Lynn Sherr, Judy Yung, Darlene Clark Hine, Holly Near and Vicki L. Ruiz. The honorees have “together written, co-authored, or edited more than 60 books, and collectively their creations reveal the depth and breadth of the multicultural female experience. They have woven women’s stories into the fabric of our history,” according to the National Women’s History Project.
